I can tell that I’m a midwesterner at heart because many of my memories about wedding days and sessions are tied to the weather and how warm (or freezing) a session felt. What I struggle with is hot summer days. I’ll gladly take 70-degree weather every day of the year over any steamy, extremely hot summer day. When I say this engagement session was steamy, I mean it was humid and hot… just like one would expect any August summer in Minnesota to be.

When planning your summer engagement session, select outfits with light fabrics so you feel comfortable throughout the duration of your session. Remember, it gets hot when you’re moving around and you don’t want to be drenched in sweat for your session. Packing an extra change of clothes is helpful because you have options to change if you get too sweaty and it gives you a variety of photos for your session.

Max and Kaila invited me to photograph them at Maplewood Nature Center where the two of them spent a memorable birthday celebrating Matt early in their relationship. Maplewood Nature Center is a little surprise located within the city. A shaded trail circles a large pond with many access points throughout the neighborhoods that surround the Nature Center. Through a portion of the pond is the Nature Center’s iconic boardwalk. It created a beautiful spot for their golden hour photos. As the sun set, the trees turned a rich reddish color, almost making it look like fall.
